HC Orders Goa Department Of Tourism To Remove Illegal Shacks From Calangute Beach

Mumbai: The High Court of Bombay at Goa recently directed the Goa Department of Tourism to remove the illegal shacks and excess deck beds on Calangute beach within five days and file a compliance report by December 21, 2011. A division bench comprising Justice AP Lavande and Justice UV Bakre passed the order in an application filed by JW D'souza. D’souza alleged that shack owners blatantly defy restrictions imposed by the tourism department while allowing permission to put up their shacks. D'souza also pointed out that the beach is cluttered with deck beds and beach umbrellas, in excess of what is permitted to them.
According to a report in The Times of India, amicus curiae Norma Alvares argued that despite earlier directions from the high court, illegalities continue on Calangute beach. There are 135 shacks and 5,400 deck beds on the beach, while the permissions granted by the government are only for 106 shacks and 1,060 deck beds, she pointed out.
Alvares sought a direction to the tourism department for taking action against the shack owners who illegally put up deck beds, hampering movement and blocking access to the beach. The bench thereafter directed the tourism department to take appropriate steps for removing the illegal shacks and excess deck beds. The bench has also directed the Superintendent of Police, North Goa, to provide necessary police protection for facilitating the removal of the encroachments. The application will be heard further on December 21, 2011.
