BELLARY: After the high court pulled up the state government for allowing illegal constructions to mushroom around world heritage site Hampi on Tuesday, the district administration decided to remove encroachments by shifting people to Kadirampura which is a few kilometres away from Hampi.
The district administration identified 11.5 acre of land to rehabilitate the people of Hampi but residents demanded houses along with proper infrastructure facilities before evacuating Hampi. According to one of residents Ravikumar, "We are ready to move from Hampi. But the government should provide alternative facilities for us. Till we get a guarantee about good facilities from the government, we won't move from our places."
Another resident Virupakshappa said, "What about our livelihood? We have been eking out a living through our business for decades. But once these shops are demolished, it will become tough for us to look for alternative jobs."
Kamalamma who runs a tea shop said, "After the court gave orders, we have been living in fear. We don't know when we will be thrown out of Hampi."
The Kottur mutt seer filed a public interest litigation before the high court against encroachments. The high court said that huge amounts of money had been spent on Hampi festivals but very little was done to improve the facilities there. The court also directed stake-holders of Hampi to conduct a meeting regarding evictions and submit a report within two weeks.
