Special Correspondent, Kochi:

Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy said here on Friday that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government's reported decision not to appoint Amitabh Bachchan as Kerala Tourism's brand ambassador was tantamount to “insulting” the actor. Mr. Chandy told mediapersons that it was improper on the part of the government to have said ‘no' to Mr. Bachchan after first having invited him to be the ambassador. “It is a case of insulting a respected person after inviting him,” he said.

Mr. Bachchan, who is currently the brand ambassador of Bharaiya Janata Party-ruled Gujarat, was invited by Kerala Tourism to be its brand ambassador and the actor had agreed. However, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) top leadership took objection to this as it would mean Mr. Bachchan, who is perceived as being soft towards BJP leader and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, would be an ideological handicap for the CPI(M).
