‘No decision yet on Bachchan'

23 March 2010

Special Correspondent, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said that the government has not taken any decision on appointing actor Amitabh Bachchan as Kerala Tourism's brand ambassador.

Replying to a submission by K. Babu (Congress) in the Assembly on Monday, Mr. Balakrishnan said a controversy had erupted even as the government was considering the matter and a decision would be taken only after considering all aspects of the issue.

The proposal, the Tourism Minister said, had come out of a TV interview in which Mr. Bachchan had expressed readiness to be Kerala Tourism's brand ambassador if a formal invitation came from Kerala.

On learning of it, he had written to Mr. Bachchan expressing gratitude for the good words he had spoken about Kerala and the hospitality extended to him by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC).

The controversy over the issue erupted even as this communication was on and no decision had been taken in the matter, he said.

The Confederation of Kerala Tourism Industry (CKTI) has asked the State government not to go back on the move to make actor Amitabh Bachchan the brand ambassador of Kerala Tourism.
