Coastal Authority Orders Razing of Two Hotels

23 June 2012
Panajim: The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) on Friday ordered demolition of two hotels and a compound hall in the Morjim-Mandrem belt, which violated Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) notification of  1991. The GCZMA in one of the three different orders passed directed demolition  of  Hotel  Papa Jolley situated  in survey no  187/50   of  Morjim   village. It found that the hotel having 12 rooms was   illegally constructed in violation of the provision of the CRZ notification. Michael D’Souza, member secretary  of GCZMA also directed  PWD and Electricity Department to disconnect water and electricity supply to the hotel.

In another order GCZMA ordered demolition of  Riva Resorts located  in survey no 273/3  of Mandrem village.

The GCZMA has earlier issued a show cause notice  alleging illegal construction of seven structures by M/s Riva Resorts  through  its directors  and  stop work orders  were issued  in this case. The GCZMA after hearing all  parties concluded that seven structures were constructed  in blatant  violation of the CRZ notification.

Moreover, it also rejected submission of the party that the structures were used for residential purpose.

The GCZMA in its order observed that violators, in the garb of repairs and renovation of residential structures, which actually do not exist on the site, proceeded to create a commercial  hotel complex  in the no development zone of Mandrem beach area. Thus  it has directed Sachin Naik, director of  M/s Riva Resorts to demolish the seven structures and ground plus one structure and restore the land to its original condition, within 20 days  from the date of receipt of the order failing which GCZMA will issue directions to the appropriate authority to demolish the same.

In another order, the GCZMA ordered demolition of a compound wall built in Morjim village within 200 metres from the high tide line by one Robert Coutinho.
