State To Promote Tourism

07 January 2012

Stating that Kerala has not been able to keep up the pace with which it had promoted tourism a quarter century back, tourism minister A P Anilkumar has said the state is far behind Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat in marketing tourism globally.

The policy of the government was to spot new destinations and improve infrastructure at existing centres, Anil Kumar told reporters yesterday. He said the government has included eight more tourist centres under responsible tourism programme.

The potential of responsible tourism was yet to be fully tapped in the state. Anil Kumar said though the programme of responsible tourism had been launched in Kovalam, Kumarakom, Wayanad and Thekkady it was successful to a considerable extent only at Kumarakom. The government will spend Rs.15 crore for developing more facilities at Fort Kochi.

The construction will start soon after getting its project report, the minister said. He said Kerala Tourism Development Corporation is launching tour packages to
promote pilgrimage tourism convering centres including Varkala, Santhigiri, Bharananganam, Malayattur, Guruvayoor and Kadampuzha.
