Imran Khan, Mumbai:

As part of its strategy to focus on forging partnerships to boost tourism in the state, Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Ltd (TCGL) has invited the heads of national level travel trade associations for discussing and signing a Memorandum of Understanding to promote tourism to the state and the country. The meeting between heads of various associations like TAAI, TAFI, IATO, ADTOI, ATOAI etc. and Vipul Mittra, Principal Secretary - Tourism, Civil Aviation and Pilgrimage, Government of Gujarat, will be held on January 14 & 15, 2012 during the last two days of the month-long Rann Utsav taking place near Bhuj in Kutch. This is perhaps the first time a state tourism board has taken an initiative to sign a MoU with travel trade associations for tourism development and promotion. Mittra extended the invitation to the Presidents of various associations during the Business Sessions organised by TravelBiz Monitor at TAAI’s India Travel Trade Expo (ITTE) held in Mumbai last month.

According to Mittra, the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit, held every two years, has been the major platform for the state to garner MoUs in various sectors. The state is now focusing on high-profile annual events like the Rann Utsav to create a platform for enhancing tourism development through MoUs. “Summits are usually the platform where MoUs are signed. However, we have extended an invitation during Rann Utsav to association heads to experience the beauty of the Rann and to jointly agree to promote Gujarat in a big way,” stated Mittra.

TCGL has tied-up with various states like Rajasthan, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Goa for joint promotion and are looking for similar MoUs with the North Eastern states. TCGL has also signed treaties with the Trade Office of Turkey to increase tourist arrivals and also with Sri Lanka for promoting the Buddhist sites of Gujarat.
