Infrastructure needs $1.7 trillion: Goldman

India will require $1.7 trillion (around Rs82.3 trillion) in financing over the next decade to meet its infrastructure needs, Goldman Sachs said in a note on Wednesday. The figure is higher than Goldman Sachs’ earlier estimate of $620 billion, while the government’s projections for the 11th Plan for 2007-12 envisages $500 billion (Rs 24.2 trillion) in infrastructure spending.

RBI on MoTs request notifies hotels to be taken out of Real Estate Exposure

According to a PIB release, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on the request of the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) has notified that hotels be taken out of the Real Estate Exposure for Banks to those entrepreneurs who themselves run these ventures. This new relaxation/ incentive will enable hotels to avail larger credits at better interest rates, which will help lower the overall cost of such hotel projects. Sujit Banerjee, Secretary, MoT had actively taken up this issue with the Ministry of Finance/Reserve Bank of India earlier this year, to accord infrastructure status to hotel projects and provide fiscal amenities for creation of additional hotel room capacity to meet the surge in demand in the tourism sector.



Railway Ministry halts infrastructure projects

According to a report by Sharmistha Mukherjee of Business Standard, the ambitious plan by the Railways to raise Rs 1,00,000 crore in the Eleventh Plan (2007-12) to develop rail infrastructure projects through Public Private Partnerships (PPP) appears to have gone badly off track. Most key projects are still to get started, mainly because of the inability to get a fix on a viable PPP policy.

Lavasa, a Mumbai-based construction company, has initiated legal action against British newspaper, The Sunday Times, for a report alleging “land-grab” by the company. In a statement, rebutting the newspaper’s claims, Lavasa said the report was “biased and relied entirely on unfounded claims made by Ms. Medha Patkar, a local Indian activist.”



MoTs latest tourist figures reveal Andhra Pradesh, Delhi as top Indian tourist destinations

According to an IANS report, Andhra Pradesh with its pilgrim spots remains a famous destination for the third time in a row, while Delhi continues to enjoy the tag of the Indian city most visited by foreigners. Latest figures from the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) show that the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, known for its renowned Tirumala Tirupati shrine and other temples, drew the maximum domestic tourists compared to other states. In 2008, a record 132.6 million people visited the state, as compared to 127 million in 2007, which in turn was a 14 per cent increase from 2006. Delhi also saw a major jump in its tourist figures in 2008 as far as foreign travellers are concerned. Over 2.3 million foreigners visited the national capital last year as compared to 2.01 million in 2007 and 1.9 million in 2006.



MoT finalises Caravan policy

According to a PTI report, Caravan tour packages popular in Europe and USA, will soon be launched in India to attract the high-end tourist particularly foreigners. Caravan Tourism, a new concept in India is being envisaged as a niche tourism product will be launched in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh (MP), Maharashtra and Himachal Pradesh (HP) in the first phase. A senior official from the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) mentioned that the Caravan policy and guidelines for the state governments have been finalised. The official added that states including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Himachal Pradesh have shown interest in the Caravan scheme. Under the Caravan or a ‘home on wheel’ packages, tourists will be provided air-conditioned vehicles with all modern facilities such as Wi-Fi connectivity, mini bar, TV besides bed and toilets.



NCR region sees completion of 41 per cent hotel rooms for Commonwealth Games 2010

According to a PIB release, during the 24th Task Force meeting with various land owning agencies of the NCR region recently, Sujit Banerjee, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism (MoT) reviewed the progress of hotel projects and other accommodation coming up for the Commonwealth Games 2010. The review meeting revealed that as against the 9,597 rooms, which are in the definite category, 3,952 rooms (or 41 per cent) have been completed and have started operations.

According to a report in The Times of India, Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister for Environment and Forests, said that houses of traditional fishermen, toddy tappers and those existing before 1991 in Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) areas of Goa will be protected from demolition. Ramesh, however, said he had no solution for the houses belonging to others and for those that came up in CRZ areas after 1991. He also said the Centre would not protect commercial, hotel or industrial interests in CRZ areas.
