The Railway Budget announced by Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee for 2010-11 highlighted the government’s initiative to kick start a new rail route between India and Bangladesh. High level discussions are on between the governments of two countries to launch these services. The proposed rail route between the two countries is Akhaura in Bangladesh and Agartala in India.

Presenting the Railway Budget for 2010-11 today in New Delhi, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee proposed to start various special trains in India along with enhancing connectivity through improving the rail network on inter and intra state level. Banerjee said that tourist trains will be launched on 21 routes and ten more Duronto (non-stop) trains will be launched. The new budget proposes to run a special tourist trains called ‘Bharat Tirth’ connecting popular tourist sites in India- from the Himalayas to Kanyakumari, Dwarka to Vindhya Paarbat, Ajmer to Gangasagar and Madurai to Patna. “The running of ‘Bharat Tirth’ will emphasise on our ‘Unity in Diversity’. The ‘Bharat Tirth’ trains are proposed to run on a total of 16 different routes in India,” added Banerjee.

According to a report in The Business Standard, the Orissa government is expediting land acquisition process for Shamuka tourism project, near Sipasarubali, about 10 kms south of Puri. In order to increase the development pace of hotel rooms before the Commonwealth Games (CWG) to be held in October this year, Ministry of Tourism (MoT) has urged the Ministry of Finance to extend the benefits of the Five-year tax holiday for budget hotels under construction in the National Capital Region (NCR) up to July 31, 2010, instead of the earlier deadline of March 31, 2010.  According to a report in Financial Express, an official from MoT said that looking at the macro-economic situation over the past year, most of the hotels will take a longer time to complete. Extending the Five-year tax holiday will be an incentive for hotels to speed up the process of development and start operations soon, adding to the country’s preparedness for the Games.

Lavasa Corporation, one of the landmark projects of Hindustan Construction Company has tied up with two more international brands for its hospitality development. The infrastructure company has tied up with global hotel chain Langham Hotels International (LHI) and US-based serviced apartment major Oakwood International on a management agreement. According to the MoU, LHI will manage two properties at Lavasa Corporation under the brands Langham Place and Eaton. The property to be managed by Oakwood International will house 150 apartments under the brand Oakwood Residency.

After launching its premium business hotel Optus Sarovar Premiere in Gurgaon recently, Anil Madhok, Managing Director, Sarovar Hotels mentioned that Sarovar Hotels and Resorts will add 20 properties across India in 2010.  This will include six new hotels in Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR).  The 80-room Optus Sarovar Premiere with 72 deluxe rooms and eight premier rooms is the third Sarovar Premiere hotel to become operational in the country, and 41st hotel to join the Sarovar Group.

The Tourism Minister Kumari Selja has said that tourism in India has already started showing signs of early recovery from the impact of global economic meltdown and in December 2009 tourist arrivals grew substantially by 21 % registering a growth of over 8% over the arrivals in December 2007 which was a year of high growth. She was speaking at the 5th Tourism Leadership Forum on the “Prospects & Challenge of Tourism Recovery for 2010/2011” held in Madrid, Spain. She informed the gathering that one of the reasons for the tourism sector in India not being impacted as much as rest of the world was the good performance of the Indian economy. She said, inspite of the global economic recession in 2008 and 2009, Indian economy has continued has continued to have good growth. India’s GDP in 2008-09 grew by 6.7%. During April-September, 2009 India’s GDP has seen a growth of 7%, whereas the global economy is estimated to have a negative growth in 2009.
