The islands in the backwaters of Kerala will witness a flurry of development activities as the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest has proposed to reduce the ‘No Development Zone' to 50 metres against the existing 200 metres from the High Tide Line. The relaxation will be for construction of dwelling units. “A special dispensation for coastal stretches of Kerala is proposed to be provided which will include a 50m ‘No Development Zone' along all backwater islands,” according to the Ministry. The case of Kerala was considered along with Navi Mumbai and Greater Mumbai, which also have thickly populated coastal areas.

Hilton Worldwide has unveiled LightStay, a proprietary system developed to calculate and analyse environmental impact, following two years of rigorous internal testing. In the first full-year of findings, the 2009 LightStay results show that the 1,300 Hilton Worldwide properties using the system, conserved enough energy to power 5,700 homes for a year, saved enough water to fill more than 650 Olympic-size pools and reduced carbon output equivalent to taking 34,865 cars off the road. Reductions in water and energy use also translated into dollars-saved for hotel owners, with estimated savings of more than USD 29 million in utility costs in 2009.

MoT plans 10,000 highway facilities by 2015

According to a IANS report, Ministry of Tourism (MoT) plans to start 10,000 wayside facilities along India’s highway network within the next five years to provide basic amenities such as clean food and restrooms to travellers. Sujit Banerjee, Secretary, MoT talking on the sidelines of a workshop on ‘Great Indian Travel Bazaar’ said recently in Jaipur that the facilities, offering rest rooms, toilets and food outlets, will come up every 40 km on state highways and every 30 km on hill roads.

14 wet zones mooted in dry Gujarat

Tourism Finance Corporation of India (TFCI), hired to prepare the state’s draft tourism policy, is learnt to have advised the state government to set up 14 wet zones as a key factor to promote beach tourism in Gujarat. A top Indian government official, who recently interacted with state officials on tourism-related issues, told TOI the TFCI’s proposal has been sent for clearance at the top level in Gujarat government. The new tourism policy is likely to be announced during the Swarnim celebrations.



Ban on sale of coastal houses recommended

A panel constituted by the Environment Ministry for public consultations on the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Notification, 1991 has recommended a ban on sale or transfer of houses of fishermen and other coastal communities to outsiders that fall within 200 metres from the high tide line (HTL). It also wants their dwelling units within 500 metres of HTL to be protected and allowed reconstruction and repairs.

The Karnataka government is planning to develop a dedicated medical hub near Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) in Devanahalli, as part of its initiative to make the city one of the preferred destinations for Medical Tourism in the world. According to a report in DNA, the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) will develop the hub, as per its ten-year tourism master plan, in coordination with city-based private hospitals, Ayurvedic and naturopathy centres. A senior official from KSTDC informed that the state government is acquiring 12,000 acres of land to develop the area near the airport and the medical hub will occupy 300 acres of this land.
