Kerala govt approves Munnar Tourist Zone Ordinance

The Kerala government has approved an ordinance for Munnar Tourism Zone which gives control of Munnar town to the government. Announcing the cabinet decision in Thiruvananthapuram today, VS Achuthanandan, Chief Minister, Kerala said that the state government will acquire about 1,036 acre of land in Kannan Devan Village in Devikulam Taluk for development of Munnar as a tourism destination as per the ordinance.

According to a PTI report, exploring new options to meet the growing demand for room space in the state, Kerala Tourism is soon going to launch a new initiative called serviced villas. The serviced villas will be independent, furnished homes preferably built in Kerala architecture style. The villas will have a minimum of one room and maximum of six rooms or 12 beds for guests besides a well equipped kitchen with a cook well versed in Kerala cuisine and a qualified person who can speak English.

Gujarat Tourism is currently studying the draft of the new Tourism Policy submitted by Tourism Finance Corporation of India (TFCI). The new Tourism Policy is expected to address major issues related to the growth of tourism in the state. Speaking with Hospitality Biz, Vipul Mittra, Secretary Tourism, Gujarat said that the new Policy will be ‘pro-active’ in the sense that it will address various issues like taxation, prohibition, fiscal incentives, land banking, etc.” Mittra added that the state government might consider easing the liquor permit system in the state through this Policy. The new Tourism Policy might also consider permitting hotels at select tourist destinations, especially beach resorts, to serve liquor to guests.

Nearly 90 per cent of the 601 hotels and dhabas in a 15-km radius outside the Pune Municipal Corporation limit employ children under the age of 14. A sample survey conducted by Action for the Rights of the Child (ARC), an umbrella organisation of various individuals and groups working on child right issues, said 88.51 per cent of these hotels violate the law.

MoT to formulate stringent approval norms for tourism development projects

In order to make tourism development projects more environmental-friendly and sustainable, the Ministry of Tourism (MoT), Government of India, will make approval norms more stringent for projects involving central funding. This was informed by Kumari Selja, Union Minister for Tourism while inaugurating the 25th Som Nath Chib Memorial Seminar of Inder Sharma Foundation in New Delhi last week. The islands in the backwaters of Kerala will witness a flurry of development activities as the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest has proposed to reduce the ‘No Development Zone' to 50 metres against the existing 200 metres from the High Tide Line. The relaxation will be for construction of dwelling units. “A special dispensation for coastal stretches of Kerala is proposed to be provided which will include a 50m ‘No Development Zone' along all backwater islands,” according to the Ministry. The case of Kerala was considered along with Navi Mumbai and Greater Mumbai, which also have thickly populated coastal areas.
