In a bid to create awareness about Responsible Tourism and to mark September 27 as World Tourism Day, the India Tourism Mumbai Office yesterday undertook an initiative to clean up the popular tourist haunt of Elephanta Island. The Elephanta Island Clean up Drive was supported by the Indian Coast Guard, Indian Red Cross Society and the Gram Panchayat. Around 200 people including locals participated in the event. The event was organized in association with Tourist Guide Association – Mumbai, Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), Archaeological Survey of India and travel trade industry.

An amount of Rs. 21500 crore may be allotted as against the allocation of Rs. 5156 crore during 11th Plan. This was announced by the Union Minister for Tourism, Shri Subodh Kant Sahai while addressing the meeting of the Consultative Committee of Parliament attached to his Ministry here last evening. Substantial proportion of the estimated outlay is proposed to be allocated for improvement of tourism infrastructure, human resource development, capacity building and promotion and publicity.

Welcoming the visiting dignitary, Shri Sahai said both the countries can explore the possibilities of cooperation in wellness, spiritual and religious tourism. The Israeli Minister said hoteliers of his country are interested to set up hotels in India. He also requested for more flights between India and Israel. THE Supreme Court has temporarily stayed an order of the Madras High Court, asking resort owners near Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu to vacate the land. In April, the high court had given resort owners three months to hand over the land with them to the state to pave the way for an elephant corridor in the Nilgiri mountains. The corridor would connect Mudumalai to the Sathyamangalam forests in the east of the Segur plateau.
