Around 80 to 90 per cent of hotels in India do not come forward for accreditation despite Government of India's efforts to make them do so, said Subodh Kant Sahai, Union Minister for Tourism, while speaking at the first India Heritage Tourism Conclave in New Delhi recently. The Minister was reacting to complaints about the lack of cleanliness and hygiene in hotels, which is a big put-off for international visitors.

The Central Bureau of Investigation, which is currently probing the illegal awarding of star ratings to eight hotels in Kerala by India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) officials, will soon send a recommendation to the Kerala government to look into the activities of the State Tourism Department which usually forwards the list of hotels to be cleared by the ITDC. Sources in the CBI said the files pertaining to the hotels were first cleared by a state committee comprising members of the State Tourism Department.

Ministry of Tourism (MoT), Government of India has intended to develop 35 integrated circuits in public private partnership (PPP) mode in all states and 20 tourism parks and 70 rural tourism clusters during the 12th Five Year Plan. This information was given by Subodh Kant Sahai, Minister of Tourism, Government  of India. He said that MoT has appointed a national level consultant to identify four tourism circuits in each state, excluding the North Eastern states and two in each union territory for integrated development of tourism circuits during the 12th Five- Year Plan period.

Announcing this to reporters, Forest Minister C P Yogeeshwara said the government will shortly notify its decision to extend the duration of traffic ban on Gundlupet-Ooty (NH-67) and Gundlupet-Wayanad (NH-212) routes by three hours, making it a 12-hour ban between 6 pm and 6 am. Presently, the ban is for nine hours, between 9 pm and 6 am. Adequate time will be given to file objections and suggestions, if any, he added.
