The Union Government is planning to add 100 budget hotels by 2016 in a bid to encourage the hospitality sector. The Ministry of Tourism wants to set up these hotels through a public-private-partnership (PPP) in one, two and three-star categories, besides adding 3,440 rooms by the end of the 12th Plan period (2012-17). The land for building these hotels will be allotted through a “transparent bidding process”, according to the Ministry of Tourism’s working group report on the 12th Plan. Companies with a minimum experience of five years in running budget hotels will be allowed to bid for these.

The Union ministry of environment and forests is planning to strengthen its tiger conservation programme in the Western Ghats and reduce man-animal conflicts by acquiring private estates that border or are within tiger reserves in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The proposal, put up during a meeting of the standing committee of the National Board for Wildlife, includes acquisition of several estates in the Periyar Tiger Reserve area (in Thekkady, Kerala) and Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu).
