The Union Government is planning to add 100 budget hotels by 2016 in a bid to encourage the hospitality sector. The Ministry of Tourism wants to set up these hotels through a public-private-partnership (PPP) in one, two and three-star categories, besides adding 3,440 rooms by the end of the 12th Plan period (2012-17). The land for building these hotels will be allotted through a “transparent bidding process”, according to the Ministry of Tourism’s working group report on the 12th Plan. Companies with a minimum experience of five years in running budget hotels will be allowed to bid for these.

The proposal, put up during a meeting of the standing committee of the National Board for Wildlife, includes acquisition of several estates in the Periyar Tiger Reserve area (in Thekkady, Kerala) and Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu).

In new guidelines issued to relocate 6,000 families in 41 tiger reserves in India, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has told the state governments that even private land, including estates should be acquired for creating inviolate space, according to a report by Hindustan Times.
