Southern Regional Consultation on GIM and REDD+

Organised by EQUATIONS and NFFPFW

28 December to 29 December 2011, Ashirwad, Bengaluru

The issues of carbon offset, related market mechanisms, United Nations Declaration on Rights of the Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIPS), FRA and the rights of the Indian forest communities, GIM, commodification and privatization of forests, India’s position on REDD and the issues that the REDD Scheme has thrown up globally were discussed and deliberated in a National Consultation in Delhi in November 2010.

The participants felt that more awareness generation on the critical issues of REDD and GIM are needed and we should reach more and more forest communities and listen to their voices. It was, therefore, felt that regional consultations inviting representatives of forest movements and groups at the ground level, from the forest communities themselves should be organized as a part of this awareness generation process and taking the critical debates down to them.
