This study by a student intern at EQUATIONS tries to analyse the impacts tourism has on tribal communities in the Nilgiri Hills, India, from the anthropological point of view. The primary population in the Nilgiris is first introduced and then the traditional lifestyle of the Todas, Badagas and Kotas. A brief history of how the Nilgiris and especially Udagamandalam (Ootacamund, Ooty) became a tourist spot is followed by an analysis of the direct and indirect impacts tourism has on tribal communities. (Ootacamund, Ooty) became a tourist spot. After that there is the analysis on the direct and indirect impacts tourism has on tribal communities and finally a brief on the present situation of the tribals and their future.
