Myriad Faces Of Tourism

In January 2008, a small team of researchers and filmmakers embarked on a trip across 10 tourist destinations in rural India. They were part of a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) study on community-based rural tourism. UNDP sought to fund infrastructure for local communities. Aditi Chanchani, Coordinator-Programmes at EQUATIONS, was the sole face of the NGO EQUATIONS in the team. The role of EQUATIONS—an acronym for ‘Equitable Tourism Options’—was to document how the other stakeholders were building infrastructure and integrating the local communities.

For over 20 years, Jakub Spalti, a Swiss tourist now aged 82, was a regular visitor to the famed Kovalam beach in Thiruvananthapuram. Giving English lessons to boys from poor families, he was a familiar face for the locals. But that was to change two years ago, when a complaint from two children compelled the Kerala Police to register a case of child abuse against Spalti, leading to hls arrest and the confiscation of his passport. Spalti then jumped bail and has since disappeared, though many in Kovalam say he has been visiting the beach.
