For over 20 years, Jakub Spalti, a Swiss tourist now aged 82, was a regular visitor to the famed Kovalam beach in Thiruvananthapuram. Giving English lessons to boys from poor families, he was a familiar face for the locals. But that was to change two years ago, when a complaint from two children compelled the Kerala Police to register a case of child abuse against Spalti, leading to hls arrest and the confiscation of his passport. Spalti then jumped bail and has since disappeared, though many in Kovalam say he has been visiting the beach.



GTO to negotiate room rates with guest house owners in Delhi

Games Travel Office (GTO) of Commonwealth Games Organising Committee will negotiate the room rates with guest house owners’ representatives in Delhi at the behest of Ministry of Tourism (MoT), Government of India. GTO is believed to have approached the MoT to help it bring the guest house owners to the negotiating table in order to fix the rates for guest houses especially from Paharganj area as soon as possible.

Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta said the Government was considering making the legislation as police had been pushing for it vigorously in the wake of rising cases of violence and harassment of tourists by touts. Two Dutch women tourists were allegedly raped several times in last five months by two men posing as tourist guides who also robbed them of their money. The incident came to light last week.
